YOUR STARTING POINT

Who this is for

Learners new to networking, IT support staff and anyone preparing to study cloud or network security.

What you’ll explore

  • Describe what each OSI layer does and how hosts communicate.
  • Work through addressing and subnetting examples.
  • Explain how DNS and DHCP help devices use a network.

A path through the subject

01

Map a packet’s journey

Draw a host, switch, router and destination. Label where addressing, forwarding and name resolution are needed.

02

Practise addressing

Write an IP address, subnet mask and default gateway for a small lab. Check why two hosts can or cannot communicate.

03

Move into routing and security

Use the routing and labs track after the foundations, then explore how a firewall controls traffic.

WATCH. PRACTISE. REPEAT.

Your questions, answered

Where should a beginner start learning networking?

Start with the Networking foundations track: networks and the OSI model, IP addresses and subnetting, then DNS and DHCP.

Is this only for Cisco learners?

The foundation topics apply across vendors. Some later routing and lab videos use Cisco technologies; firewall lessons also include Palo Alto.

Can I learn networking without buying hardware?

You can watch every lesson without hardware. For practice, use a suitable simulator or lab environment; licensing and availability depend on the tools you choose.
